In 2010 California established a new permanency option for native children who are dependents of California Courts: Tribal Customary Adoption. The enacting law requires county child welfare workers to consult with the child’s tribe about the possibility of customary adoption as a permanency option in every case involving an Indian child. This webpage includes links to the legislation, a summary of the requirements, rules of the court and forms implementing the legislation, contact information, and other helpful resources. Also included is a brief document responding to frequently asked questions.
